Ford Beckman
Who is Ford Beckman? Ford Beckman is a contemporary artist, born in Columbus, Ohio in 1952. Beckman’s work has been exhibited internationally and is included in such notable public collections as Panza Collection, Italy; Saatchi Collection, London; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Israeli Museum, Jerusalem; Essl Collection, Vienna; the Denver Art Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
Beckman started his career out of college working in the Fashion industry. He successfully started and developed fashion lines that eventually brought him from Tulsa, OK where he was living and working in the late 70s, early 80s, to New York, working with international greats. His interest in painting began at a young age, even expressing interest in the craft in his college days, but it wasn’t until the mid 80s that he began to truly explore this gift.
For the past two decades Beckman has approach his works with duality – creating minimal “Black Wall Paintings” and explosive “Pop Paintings”. He truly captures the purpose of the work and its the essence, much like his personal heroes easily identified once you’ve seen the pieces - Malevich, Pollock, Johns or Warhol.
The current show at Maloney Fine Art, “Pop Targets” is, according to Maloney, “an ongoing investigation of the hybridization of minimal and pop aesthetics. Simultaneously mechanical and gestural, explosive and contemplative, Ford’s Neo-Suprematist/Neo-Spiritual/Neo-Pop paintings expand and continue a modernist discourse.”
In his “Targets” you find his need to rethink and rework – the application of reprise and revision to articulate the iconic. He has re-identified the simplicity of this symbol and created supple, bold interpretations of it in his use of color and industrial materials. But it’s not just a study of icons, or a modernist painting approach that creates the identity of this body of work.
“Beckman’s painting is a response to the spiritual crisis of modernity. With Beckman, painting renews its spiritual intention, becomes a spiritual sanctuary, achieves, once again, a spiritual aura, if in a very different, indeed worsening spiritual climate.” Donald Kuspit
Make use of the next two weeks that Ford Beckman’s “Pop Targets” will be on display in Culver City.

Our artist, JOSHUA (listentojoshua.com) has just “Unofficially” released his new EP for all to hear! Why “Unofficial”? Well, you can only buy the EP in the online, indie artist supported platform, Bandcamp.
Bandcamp has been around a couple years, and must have been started by musicians, because this platform ultimately, and efficiently works to benefit the breed. ”I love Bandcamp! It’s been an awesome tool for me and many of my peers in the industry for the past year or two that I’ve been on it. I really can’t say enough good things about it!” - Joshua
AS A BONUS, Joshua has decided to also give away some free music exclusively through his Mailing List… SO if you’re not on the “List”, you don’t get it! Please be sure to sign up on his Website – there’s an option to do so right on the front page!!
You can also find podcasts of the record on Spotify (click here) and on iTunes (click here). It’s titled “JOSHUA | LISTEN” and you’re going to love his new sound! Tapping into the musical geniuses of Deron Johnson and Andrea Remanda, Joshua has come up with a smash hit sound that you’ll find in only a few artists of his time.
The EP is only the beginning! Danda Productions (Deron Johnson and Andrea Remanda) and JOSHUA are working with us at TSE to put together a FULL LENGTH record sometime later this year – WE’RE PRETTY EXCITED ABOUT THAT!!
Stay tuned, and don’t forget to drop in on music.listentojoshua.com, Joshua’s official Bandcamp online store to get a copy of the record today!

Maloney Fine Art is a fantastic little gallery in the Culver City art scene of Los Angeles, CA that always carries a unique selection of some of the best up-and-coming contemporary art in LA. The other unique factor about this particular little spot is that the owner, Michael Maloney, is a reseller of many fantastic contemporary artists from decades past including Andy Warhol, Donald Judd, Robert Mapplethorpe, Josef Albers, and some more recent well known artists like Malick Sadibe, chinese artist Zhang Huan, George Stoll, and Zadik Zadikian.
Currently, Maloney is hosting a show with Angeleno artist Danny First. As First’s first solo show, they’re pulling all the stops and have really put together a wonderful selection of work that take you, quite literally through the mind of the artist, brining out the many faces of his creative nature… These head’s are reminiscent of universal expression and seem to begin friendly conversation with you as soon as you walk in the door to the little gallery space.
Please join us at Maloney Fine Art (2680 S. La Cienega Blvd, Culver City, CA 90034) this Saturday, January 7, 2012 from 6 to 8pm for the grand opening of Danny First’s show, “Peaceful Solitude”. And if you’re curious about Maloney Fine Art or their upcoming shows, stay tuned on www.MaloneyFineArt.com or their exhibitions blog, www.MaloneyFineArt.Blogspot.com.

Joshua Smith is a vocalist, singer-songwriter, author, among other things… But has most recently been applying his talents to some amazing causes.
Raising over 100,000 as an executive producer earlier this year for the Play it Forward Productions / True Source Entertainment concert for the Relay for Life of Beverly Hills, $40,000 for the OVERFLOW: VOICES IN ACTION, Joplin, MO fundraiser for Watered Gardens, and most recently with the cast of The Young and The Restless raising funds for the Susan G. Comen foundation in Seattle, WA, Joshua Smith is an accredited and accomplished activist.
Recently he was recognized by LifebyMe.com and given a front page spread on their site. They asked him to write some thoughts about living a good life, and particularly, on what “potential” means. Check it out here!

Play it Forward’s FIGHT BACK Concert was a complete success!! From the community RAISING OVER $81k, to Executive Producers, Josh Smith and Stevie Riolo bringing the theme for the show to a head, and Josh’s version of “Hallelujah” – sung with the West Coast Singers choir for the Luminaria Ceremony at the end of the night!
We will be uploading more photos and videos from the concert itself, but to start here are a few photos from the daytime performers: The Tokens, Isaiah MacMenami, Jennifer Sombrotto, and Lonesome Highway
